Find Missing Serial Number
Getting Started
You need to obtain an iClicker, register it in Quest and know your BOX NUMBER in
order to participate in inclass quizzes and tests.
Clicker FAQs:
- The serial number on the back is a HEXADECIMAL number (digits 0-9 and letters A,B,C,D,E,F).
- There is a yellow "low battery" light; it is your responsibility to keep batteries
fresh. Communication cannot be guaranteed if the light comes on.
- A green "vote status" light on the clicker means the signal was received.
- Warning: Wait until the status light goes out before pressing a second button.
Register iClickers
Log into Quest at http://quest.cns.utexas.edu/student
Choose MY PROFILE on the top menu bar and enter the serial number from the back
side of your iClicker (digits 0-9 and letters A,B,C,D,E,F).
View Your Box Number
- Log into Quest and select your course.
- The clicker box number is in the "course information" section at the top of that
page.
- Note that your assigned box number for in-class assignments can be different in
each course.
Quiz Mode
Your box number will be in the upper left-hand corner of your box on the grid.
Test your communication: When the grid is on the screen (and the timer is
on), press any key and see the response (green color) in your box on the grid. If
your box does not respond, it could be a clicker problem (battery) or you have not
registered the clicker appropriately.
When you press additional keys, the box color will brighten briefly, then return to the
original green.
Test Mode
The assignment is created, published and printed in Quest.
Exams are disbursed to students in class.
Each question can have up to 10 choices (requiring multiple "keystrokes" for each
response). The keystroke legend

remains in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
Your box number is the same; once time has started, enter your version number, then
navigate to the question of your choice and enter the appropriate key sequence for
your response.
There is no "backspace and erase" button -- start typing the code from the beginning
until the bad characters scroll out of your box.
Navigation:
- E is used as the "enter" key.
- CC E allows you to move back one question.
- CD E allows you to move forward one question.
- You can "wrap around" from the first question to the last by going "back" or from
the last question to the first by going "forward."
- You cannot "backspace and erase" -- start typing the correct code again and the
bad characters will scroll out of your box.
Identify/enter the version number:
- In the heading of your exam you will see your version number followed by the code
you need to enter (like Version 044 / AACDA ...).
- Slowly type AACDA.

If you make a mistake, start typing it again until the bad characters scroll out
of your box.
- Press E.
- Check the number in your box against the version number on your exam.

If correct, press E again. If not correct, start typing the code AACDA
again.
- If you enter the wrong version number, your only option is to bubble your answers
on a scan sheet to be processed later.
Submit answers:
- Grid responses when you submit an answer:
RED (incorrect); BLUE (correct);
GRAY (resubmission of a response -- no penalty);
blinking YELLOW (response out of range -- no penalty)
- The question number 1 is displayed in the lower left-hand corner.

- Navigate to question 3: type CD E to move to question 2, then CD E
to move to question 3.

- Type AB E -- red with response 2 indicated -- incorrect answer
Example of feedback for incorrect answer:

- Go back to question 2: type CC E
- Type BB E -- blue with response 6 indicated -- correct answer
Example of feedback for correct answer:

Find Missing Serial Number
Your instructor needs to launch the iClicker application and be at the point where
the grid (with box numbers) is on the screen.
Find your serial number:
- Press any key on your iClicker.
- A new box will appear with a 6-digit HEX number (digits 0 - 9 and letters A - F)
sent by your clicker.
- Write this down. It will be used to register your clicker on Quest.
Register the serial number with Quest:
- Log into Quest, and go into your PROFILE.
- Enter eight characters in the appropriate box -- the 6 digits from
the app software followed by xx (two lower case letters).
Your responses will be tied to your EID the next time the clicker app is launched in class.
